EDGE

A system for the management of COPD

EDGE is a system for the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that was developed by Oxford University (the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Primary Healthcare Sciences), with support from the Department of Health and the Wellcome Trust through the Health Innovation Challenge Fund.

EDGE was shown to reduce hospital admissions by 17% during a 12-month clinical trial. EDGE has also been shown to improve the overall health status of patients and reduce the number of visits to see the GP by 28% and to see practice nurses by 40%, saving them time.

Tablet Technology

EDGE uses state-of-the-art, multi-purpose Android tablet technology, with Bluetooth-enabled sensors.

Easy to use

EDGE has no keyboard and uses large icons with bright colours for selecting menu options or answers to symptom diary questions, making it simple and easy to use.

Pulse Oximeter Probe

EDGE patients are given a pulse oximeter finger probe to measure oxygen saturation levels easily.

Intelligent algorithms

EDGE uses intelligent algorithms to improve patient compliance and medical adherence.

Simple self-management

EDGE makes it easy for patients to self-manage their condition by giving them feedback on their physical well-being (through the use of graphs of their vital signs and symptom diary). It also gives patients motivational and psychological support (e.g. through the use of videos and multi-media content).
